So Long Cable, Hello Life!

June 5, 2007

After some hemming and hawing, we cancelled our cable again. I made the call on the 23rd, thinking they’d cut it that day, only to find it hanging around until the 31st like an unwanted house guest.

It’s been 5 days.

Have I missed it? Well, actually… no. There are shows out there that probably would interest me if I gave them the chance to sink their claws into my brain time. But there’s been no opportunity! Turns out that I have many, many things I can do with the time I spent watching my handful of shows. Things like:

  • Catching up on my reading.
  • Finally getting on with my spring-clearing.
  • De-cluttering the apartment (where does all this stuff come from??)
  • Looking at my list of ‘wanna-do’ projects and figuring out which ones to tackle first.
  • Getting all my practice runs in, which will be easier now that both Lunchtruck and I have better shoes (Yeah- there’s a story there - but I’ll let him tell it).
  • Catching up with family and friends I’ve been neglecting.
  • Renting/borrowing movies from the library that I’d really like to see.

So I’m curious - if you suddenly didn’t have TV anymore, what would you do with that time? Would you spend more time outdoors? On hobbies? Online? Would you finally take that trapeze lesson through the Vancouver Circus School?

cutting cable off in summer is “cheating” - there’s noting on anyway! just wait until deepest, darkest November …

where do you find these fantastic vancouver activities? I have always wanted to learn to trapeze. Is that a verb? nevermind, i just made it one. and way to go with the cable. i’ve been clean for 4 years and it feels awesome. any shows i really want to watch, i can rent, and the great part about that is that i can sit down and watch an entire season in a weekend and get overdosed on it, and the even better part is that i get to watch them in my own time, rather than trying to organize my schedule around the tv.

so when are you doing the architecture walks? i’m excited to get out there and learn more about my wonderful city.

Kathryn: LOL - possibly! But I do have a plan for this winter that includes going to the gym and spending more time with classic movies and knitting projects.
Zoe: Once I’m past this week’s deadlines, I’m going to start booking time for the architectural tours. As for where I find out about this stuff? It’s usually a “hmmm.. wonder if??” and then I look it up. It all comes out of my evil head.

    Hey Cin,

Thanks for stopping by my blog. Just posted a pic of the new ink.

If I didn’t have cable - or satellite, which is what I have - I’d probably read waaaaaaay more and spend way more time online. I’d probably watch a lot of movies, too. This is actually a good time of year to get rid of cable because since every decent show on TV nowadays is over for the season, there’s absolutely nothing on. I’m already watching way less TV.

My kids would murder me..the withdrawal from TreeHouse would be painful to watch.

I spend more time on the computer or reading than tv nowadays….but there are a few channels and shows we all like to see…..

Ah sleep! I thought I’d be getting more, but nooooooo, that’s not meant to be this week. S’ok - I’m building up good karma.

At this point, I’d probably break into someone else’s home and watch their TV.
Good for you for breaking free.

I’ve been toying with the idea of cancelling cable, but that would cancel our internet connection as well, and the idea of going back to dial-up… I think I would read more. I might even break out the sewing machine. I do knit in front of the television, although I’ve made a very conscious effort as of late to restrict my viewing time. I don’t miss it!

Who?

I'm no fan of labels, but I know they can be useful, so here are some I've been tagged with recently: Dreamer. Nerble. Multi-tasker. Distracted by Shiny. Wife. Lover. Cheerleader. Sister. Running partner. Knitter. Photographer. Catalyst. Photoshop Geek. She Who Must Be Obeyed. ECIAD student. CrankyPants. Far from perfect. Always learning. Joyfully immature.
